refractory anemia with ringed sideroblasts (RARS)

Epidemiology: 1) most common acquired form of sideroblastic anemia 2) 24% of cases of myelodysplastic syndrome Pathology: 1) circulating blasts < 1% 2) bone marrow blasts < 5% 3) > 15% ringed sideroblasts in marrow 4) no Auer rods Management: -> prognosis: a) 0-15% (mean 5%) transformation to acute leukemia (AML) b) survival 21-76 months (mean 49 months)
