red wine
Red wine may have especially potent cardioprotective effect against coronary artery disease. Resveratrol is thought to be a major beneficial component of red wine.
Polyphenols in ethanol-free extracts of red wine diminished synthesis of endothelin-1 by cultured bovine endothelial cells. Red grape juice had a similar, but less potent effect. White & rose wines did not have this effect. The reduction in endothelin-1 was not mediated by antioxidant properties of the red-grape polyphenols.
Lower all cause mortality in men 23-37% [2]
Only alcoholic beverage associated with diminished risk of ischemic stroke. RR = 0.5 for > 10 g/day [3]
red wine 1-7 servings per week may diminish risk of new-onset atrial fibrillation [5]
red wine (150 mL daily) associated with increased HDL cholesterol (2.0 mg/dL), serum apolipoprotein1 (0.03 g/L) & cholesterol/HDL ratio (0.27), relative to mineral water
Benefit of red wine may be due to other components in addition to resveratrol. [4]
