red pulp (of spleen)

The blueish-red tissue occupying 75% of the spleen parenchyma. It consists of venous sinusoids separated by a fibrous reticulum containing fibroblasts & macrophages; on section it has the appearance of splenic cords. Its color derives from the abundance of erythrocytes in the sinusoids.
