phenazopyridine (Pyridium, Azo-Standard, Uristat, Prodium)

Tradename: Pyridium. Indications: - symptomatic relief of dysuria* - pain, burning, urinary urgency & urinary frequency arising from irritation of the lower urinary tract - caused by urinary tract infection - following urological procedures * does NOT provide antimicrobial coverage Dosage: 1) 100-200 mg PO TID after meals for 2 days 2) do NOT use chronically 3) adequate hydration is needed Tabs: 100 & 200 mg. Adverse effects: 1) not common (1-10%) - headache, dizziness, epigastric cramps 2) uncommon (< 1%) - vertigo, skin pigmentation, rash, methemoglobinemia, hemolytic anemia, hepatitis, acute renal failure 3) other a) anaphylactoid-like reactions b) will turn urine orange [5] c) will stain clothes & contact lenses Mechanism of action: - azo dye that exerts a topical analgesic effect on the urinary mucosal tract
