Differential diagnosis: Conditions that can be mistaken for vasculitis include: 1) cholesterol emboli 2) cardiac myxoma, atrial myxoma 3) malignancy a) paraneoplastic vasculitis - skin & nervouse system involvement most common b) Trousseau's syndrome c) lymphoma 4) coagulopathy a) antiphospholipid syndrome b) thrombotic thrombocytopenic purpura c) disseminated intravascular coagulation 5) infections: a) bacterial endocarditis b) sepsis c) hepatitis d) aspergillosis 7) Goodpasture's syndrome 8) drugs/toxicity: - cocaine, amphetamines, ephedra alkaloids, phenylpropanolamine can cause vasospasm 9) erythema multiforme - mucous membrane involvement common - does not cause hypertension or widespread purpura [1] 10) scurvy [2]
