proinsulin

Precursor to insulin synthesized in beta-cells of the pancreatic islets of Langerhans. Its synthesis & formation of disulfide bonds occurs in the endoplasmic reticulum. It is then transported to the Golgi where it is packaged into secretory granules & processed by a series of peptidases/proteases to form mature insulin, C-peptide & 4 amino acids. Peptidases processing proinsulin include: - carboxypeptidase E
