proctoscopy

A procedure for viewing the rectum & distal sigmoid colon. 25 cm protoscopes are used. Indications: 1) evaluation for cervical carcinoma metastasis 2) inspection of hemorrhoids or rectal polyps 3) foreign body Contraindications: - see sigmoidoscopy Patient preparation: - see sigmoidoscopy Complications: - see sigmoidoscopy Caution: 1) 10% of patients have combustible levels of hydrogen & methane in the bowel 2) do NOT use electrocautery during sigmoidoscopy because of risk of explosion
