primary care rule for deep vein thrombosis
A prediction rule that combine clinical features to predict deep vein thrombosis (DVT)
Indications:
- used to assess need for ultrasound to rule out DVT
Procedure:
Variable Points
male sex 1
presence of active malignancy 1
major surgery (within 3 months) 1
absence of leg trauma 1
dilated collateral veins (not varicose) 1
calf swelling >= 3 cm 2
positive plasma D-dimer 6
- a score of >=3 is positive
Clinical significance:
- performs slightly better than the Well's rule for DVT [1]
- rule misses 1.4% of DVTs identified by ultrasound [1]
