praziquantel (Biltricide)
Tradename: Biltricide.
Indications:
- trematode & cestode infections
- opisthorchiasis
- clonorchiasis
- schistosomiasis
- cysticercosis
- liver flukes
- except Fasciola hepatica
Dosage:
1) shistosomiasis: 20 mg/kg PO every 6 hours for 3 doses
2) flukes: 25 mg/kg PO every 8 hours for 1-2 days
3) cysticercosis: 15-18 mg/kg PO every 8 hours for 14 days
- adjuntive treatment with glucocorticoids for neurocysticercosis
4) tapeworms 10-20 mg/kg as single dose
5) Hymenolepis nana: 25 mg/kg as single dose
Tabs: 600 mg
Adverse effects:
1) not common (1-10%)
- dizziness, drowsiness, headache, malaise, abdominal pain, loss of appetite, nausea/vomiting, sweating
2) uncommon (< 1%)
- rash, urticaria, pruritus, CSF reaction syndrome in patients treated for neurocysticercosis, fever, diarrhea
