protein phosphatase-1 regulatory subunit 3C (protein phosphatase 1 regulatory subunit 5, R5, protein targeting to glycogen, PTG, PPP1R3C, PPP1R5)
Function:
- glycogen-targeting subunit for PP1 & regulates its activity
- activates glycogen synthase
- diminishes glycogen phosphorylase activity
- limits glycogen breakdown
- increases basal & insulin-stimulated glycogen synthesis upon overexpression in a variety of cell types
- interacts with PPP1CC catalytic subunit of PP1 & associates with glycogen
- forms complexes with glycogen phosphorylase, glycogen synthase & phosphorylase kinase which is necessary for its regulation of PP1 activity
- interacts with EPM2A/laforin
Structure:
- contains 1 CBM21 domain (carbohydrate binding type-21)
- N-terminal region is required for binding to PP1
- central region is required for binding to glycogen
- C-terminal region is required for binding to glycogen phosphorylase, glycogen synthase & phosphorylase kinase
