podophyllin; podophyllum resin (Podocon-25, Podofin)
Tradenames: Podocon-25, Podofin. (unclear how this differs from podophyllotoxin)
Indications:
- plantar warts
- condylomata acuminata (anogenital warts)
- laryngeal papillomatosis
- keratoderma
Contraindications:
1) cervical, urethral or oral warts
2) diabetes mellitus
3) poor circulation
4) pregnancy
25% resin solution.
Topical agent: applied weekly BY PHYSICIAN.
Adverse effects:
1) not common (1-10%)
- nausea/vomiting, abdominal pain, diarrhea, pruritus
2) uncommon (< 1%)
- confusion, lethargy, hallucination, peripheral neuropathy, leukopenia, thrombocytopenia, hepatotoxicity, renal failure
3) other [2]
- systemic absorption may result in adverse effects when large areas of skin are exposed to podophyllin
- seizures
- coma
