pleomorphic adenoma; benign mixed tumor
Pathology:
- ~75 - 85% arise in parotid gland
- ~5 - 10% arise in submandibular gland
- ~10% arise in minor salivary glands
Microscopic pathology:
- wide variety of cell types
- inner & outer tubular cells
- squamous cells
- myxochondroid cells w/wo lacunar spaces
- hyaline cells
- spindle cells
Clinical manifestations:
- painless persistent swelling
- any age group, most common adults 3rd to 5th decades
- facial nerve involvement uncharacteristic
