Definition varies widely, ranging from exclusion of all animal products to only an emphasis on fruits, vegetables, cereal & beans while including fish, poultry, & low-fat dairy [2] - some plant-based diets reduce or eliminate intake of highly refined plant foods such as white flours, sugars, & oils [2] Indications: - healthy plant-based diet associated with reduced cardiovascular risk [1] - healthy plant-based diet associated with reduced risk of colorectal cancer in men [4] Management: - combination of plant-based diet with Mediterranean diet, DASH diet or both (MIND diet) may provide greatest health benefit [3] Notes: - whole grains, fruits, vegetables, vegetable oils, nuts, legumes, tea & coffee considered healthy [4] - refined grains, sweets, potatoes considered unhealthy - animal products considered unhealthy [1] - plant-based meat alternatives may be part of a heart-healthy diet [5]
