catenin gamma; junction plakoglobin; desmoplakin-3 (JUP, CTNNG, DP3)

Function: - common junctional plaque protein - membrane-associated plaques are architectural elements in a strategic position to influence the arrangement & function of both the cytoskeleton & the cells within tissue - presence of gamma catenin in both the desmosomes & in the intermediate junctions suggests that it plays a role in structure & function of submembranous plaques - interacts with desmoglein 1 - interacts with MUC1 Structure: - homodimer - belongs to the beta-catenin family - contains 9 ARM repeats Compartment: - cell junction, adherens junction, desmosome - cytoplasm, cytoskeleton, peripheral membrane - cytoplasmic in a soluble & membrane-associated form Genetics: gene locus: 17q21 Pathology: - defects in JUP are the cause of a) Naxos disease b) arrhythmogenic right ventricular cardiomyopathy type 12
