pituitary adenoma/non-secreting

Most non-secreting pituitary adenomas actually secrete gonadotropins, their subunits or both. Genetics: Microarray analysis [2] 1) comparing different pituitary adenoma types & normal pituitary: a) genes uniquely overexpressed 2x or >: - guanine nucleotide binding protein, beta polypeptide - ATPase, Ca+2 transporting, plasma membrane 1 - glutamate cysteine ligase - ubiquitin specific protease 9, Y chromosome - KIAA0591 protein - KIAA0911 protein - CBP/p300-interacting transactivator - histone deacetylase 1 - cellular retinoic acid binding protein 2 b) genes uniquely underexpressed 2x or >: - keratin 18 2) comparing with normal pituitary: a) genes overexpressed 2x or >: ? b) genes underexpressed 2x or >: - protease inhibitor 12 - prolactin Radiology: - CT or MRI of sella turcica (preferably MRI); repeat in 6 months if no surgery [1] Management: - - asymptomatic pituitary microadenomas do not require treatment [1] - surgery is the only effective treatment
