pimecrolimus (Elidel)
Tradename: Elidel.
Indications:
- topical agent for treatment of mild to moderate eczema
- atopic dermatitis [3,5]
- severe cases of lichen planus
Dosage: apply BID
Elidel: 1% pimecrolimus
Adverse effects:
1) may cause feeling of skin warmth or burning, esp in 1st few days
2) photosensitivity (use sunscreen)
3) increased risk of skin cancer [4,6]
Mechanism of action:
1) non-steroid topical immunosuppressive agent
2) suppresses release of cytokines from T-cells & mast cells
3) IL-2 inhibitor ?
4) inhibits calcineurin (calcineurin inhibitor)
