pilomyxoid astrocytoma
more aggressive variant of pilocytic astrocytoma vs. separate entity.
Microscopic pathology:
- similar to pilocytic astrocytoma but more monomorphous and more myxoid [1]
- no Rosenthal fibers (18/18 cases) [1]
- some features of myxopapillary ependymoma [2] (cells converging on small blood vessels pseudorossette-like)
Electron microscopy:
- bipolar cells with elongated processes
- apical surfaces with microvilli, cytoplasmic blebs, rare cilia
- vesicles & coated pits seen
- occasional synaptoid complex [2] Immunohistochemistry (3 cases) [2]:
- GFAP +
- vimentin +
- S 100 +
- synaptophysin +
- chromogranin -
