Pickwickian syndrome

Epidemiology: 5% of cases of sleep apnea. Pathology: 1) efficiency of respiratory muscles is 60-70% of normal 2) in later stages, right heart failure is followed by left heart failure 3) cor pulmonale Clinical manifestations: 1) morbid obesity 2) hypersomnolence 3) cyanosis 4) plethora 5) obstructive sleep apnea Laboratory: 1) complete blood count (CBC) - polycythemia 2) arterial blood gas (ABG) a) hypoxia b) hypercarbia
