phytoestrogen

Plant-derived non-steroidal compounds with weak estrogen-like activity. Most exist in the diet as inactive compounds, but undergo enzymatic activation in the gastrointestinal tract to compounds with a steroidal structure resembling estrogens. [2] Classification: 4 classes of phytoestrogens 1) isoflavones 2) lignans 3) cumestrans 4) phytosterols Indications: - may be associated with diminished risk of lung cancer [2] Contraindications: - No benefit for post-menopausal hot-flashes [1]
