photophobia

An abnormal intolerance of light. Etiology: 1) eye disease a) iritis, uveitis b) burns to eye c) corneal abrasion, corneal ulceration d) chalazion, episcleritis, glaucoma 2) migraine 3) meningitis 4) pharmaceuticals a) mydriatic agents (dilation of the pupils) b) other: amphetamines, atropine, cocaine, cyclopentolate, idoxuridine, phenylephrine, scopolamine, trifluridine, tropicamide, vidarabine 5) eye irritation: contact lenses 6) traumatic brain injury [2] Complications: - RED FLAGS - eye pain, itching - headache - nausea - neck stiffness - blurred vision - eye injury - red eye - swelling - dizziness - paresthesia - hearing impairment Management: - general - avoid sunlight - close eyes - dark glasses - darkening the room - specific treatment for specific etiology
