paired helical filament (PHF) tau
Structure:
- the form of tau found in paired helical filaments
- PHF-tau is a dimer with polypeptide chains antiparallel in orientation
- the polypeptides are hyperphosphorylated & covalently linked through disulfide bonds in their microtubule binding domains
- the PHF tau oligomerized to for neuropil threads
