pescovegetarian diet; pesco-vegetarian diet; pescatarian diet

A diet that excludes all meats except fish & seafood, typically allows dairy products & eggs but is otherwise a vegetarian diet. Benefits: - 34% lower coronary disease mortality than non-vegetarians [1] - among 7th Day Adventists pesco-vegetarians with the lowest risks for - all-cause mortality - cardiovascular disease mortality - other-cause mortality compared to - vegans, lacto-ovo vegetarians, semi-vegetarians, & non-vegetarians - lowers all-cause mortality [2] a) benefit greater in men b) pescovegetarian diet marginally better than vegan diet - reduced risk of colorectal cancer (RR=0.57) [3] - lowers risk of ischemic heart disease (RR=0.87) vs meat eaters [4] - vegan & pesco-vegetarian diets associated with significantly higher eGFR vs with nonvegetarian diets in patients with chronic kidney disease [5] - pescovegetarian does not increase risk of stroke [4]
