The thick fibrous membrane covering the entire surface of a bone except its articular cartilage. Structure: Consists of 2 layers: 1) inner layer a) osteogenic: forms new bone tissue b) active in young growing bone; reduced in adults 2) outer fibrous connective tissue layer - conveys blood vessels & nerves supplying bone Radiology: - nuclear bone scan showing uptake of radionuclide in the periosteum of long bones suggests periosteal thickening of the long bones associated with hypertrophic osteoarthropathy
