penicillin V (Pen-Vee K, Veetids, V-Cillin K, Aoracillin-B, Beepen VK, Lanacillin VK, Ledercillin VK, Robicillin VK, Wincillin-VK)

Tradenames: Pen-Vee K, Veetids. 1st generation penicillin. Indications: - moderate to severe susceptible bacterial infections - upper respiratory tract infections - pharyngitis - sinusitis - gingivostomatitis - skin or soft tissue infections - urinary tract infections - antibiotic prophylaxis for: - pneumococcal infection - rheumatic fever - treatment of otitis media Dosage: 1) 250-500 mg PO QID 2) pharyngitis alternate 1000 mg PO BID x 10 days 3) Children: 25-50 mg/kg/day divided QID Tabs: 125, 250, 500 mg. Elixir: 125 & 250 mg/5 mL. Antimicrobial activity: - Streptococcus pyogenes - Staphylococcus aureus (MSSA) Adverse effects: 1) common (> 10%) - mild diarrhea, nausea/vomiting, oral candidiasis 2) uncommon (< 1%) - convulsions, fever, hemolytic anemia, positive direct antiglobulin (Coomb's) test (DAT), acute interstitial nephritis, hypersensitivity reactions, anaphylaxis
