pattern alopecia

Clinical manifestations: 1) men - hair thinning on the crown, or - hair recession in the area of the temples 2) women - hair thinning of the crown - frontal hairline is preserved - a part that is distinctly wider anteriorly Differential diagnosis: - polycystic ovary syndrome Management: 1) men - 2%-5% topical minoxidil - oral finasteride 2) women - 2%-5% topical minoxidil - finasteride of no benefit to majority of women AND it is pregnancy category: X - spironolactone may be of benefit
