paternal age

Notes: - spontaneous genetic mutations occur during spermatogenesis & are passed on to children - most spontaneous genetic mutations come from the father - the rate of spontaneous genetic mutation increases with the father's age at conception - paternal age is a risk factor for autism & schizophrenia - advancing paternal age is associated with increased risk of psychiatric & academic morbidity [2] - paternal age >= 45 years associated with premature birth, lower Apgar scores, admission to neonatal ICU [3] - also associated with increased risk of gestational diabetes in mothers (may be due to placental health)
