inability to properly identify an odor's natural smell
Clinical manifestations:
- natural odor sensed as an unpleasant aroma, typically a burned, rotting, fecal, or chemical smell
Special laboratory:
- University of Pennsylvania Smell Identification Test (UPSIT)
Management:
- symptoms frequently decrease with time
- consult ENT for procedures to induce anosmia or hyposmia
