Indications: 1) useful for distinguishing primary hyperparathyroidism from hypercalcemia due to malignancy 2) useful as a marker in the management of patients with tumor-associated hypercalcemia Specimen: 1) plasma (heparin) 2) collect in tubes that contain protease inhibitor (aprotinin & leupeptin) 3) chill specimens immediately in icewater 4) plasma should be separated in a refrigerated centrifuge, then frozen immediately at -20 degrees C in plastic vials Reference values: - < 1.5 pmol/L (adult) Increases: -> humoral hypercalcemia of malignancy a) lymphomas b) squamous cell carcinoma of the lung c) breast cancer
