DEA-controlled substance: class 4.
Dosage: Hypnosis: 0.3 mL/kg up to 4-8 mL PO/PR. Sedation: 0.15 mL/kg up to 5-10 mL PO/PR. Delirium tremens: up to 10-35 mL PO.
Liquid: 1 g/mL.
Adverse effects:
1) disagreeable taste
2) irritation to the throat & stomach
3) cyanosis
4) cough
5) hypotension
6) respiratory depression
7) acidosis
8) hepatitis
9) nephrosis
10) pulmonary hemorrhage & edema
11) right ventricular dilation
Laboratory:
1) specimen: serum, plasma (EDTA)
2) methods: GLC
3) interferences: GLC method measures acetaldehyde, which must be excluded as interfering substance
