papilledema
Edema of the optic disc.
Etiology:
- increased intracranial pressure
- brain tumor
- obstructive hydrocephalus
- cerebral venous thrombosis
- pseudotumor cerebri
- hypertensive emergency (less common) [2]
Clinical manifestations:
1) visual acuity generally unaffected
2) pupillary reflexes normal
3) headache & transient vision loss associated with increased intracranial pressure
Special laboratory:
- ophthalmoscopy
- lipid (appears yellow) leaks out into the macula
- elevated optic disc & indistinct disc margins [2]
