A membrane of granulation tissue covering a normal surface. It may take the form of: 1) inflammatory synovial tissue found in rheumatoid joints that covers the articular cartilage -> the pannus progressively destroys the underlying cartilage 2) membranes found in other granulomatous diseases -> tuberculosis 3) the cornea in trachoma
