Indications: - diabetes mellitus type-1 Procedure: 1) infusion of cadaveric donor islets into the portal vein* a) immunosuppression - sirolimus - tacrolimus -daclizumab b) more than one transplantation procedure is generally needed 2) stem cell transplantation (investigational) - transplant of chemically-induced pluripotent stem-cell-derived islets under the abdominal anterior rectus sheath in a woman with type-1 diabetes [3] - reprogrammed autologous stem cells transformed into insulin-producing islet cells transplanted into the liver of a man with type-2 diabetes [4] * Historically, successful in < 10% of patients. Newer protocols may be more successful.
