Pain on swallowing.
Etiology:
1) mucosal inflammation: sharp burning pain
a) reflux esophagitis
b) esophageal infection (generally opportunistic)
- Candida
- Herpes virus
- cytomegalovirus
- bacterial esophagitis
c) pill esophagitis
2) muscular spasm: squeezing, cramping pain
3) distension of the esophagus
4) tonsillitis
5) laryngitis
6) epiglottitis
7) upper respiratory tractions
8) xerostomia
9) Zenkers diverticulum
10) adenoiditis
11) immune disorders
12) esophageal cancer
13) myasthenia gravis
14) scleroderma
15) Behcet's syndrome [7]
16) hyoid bone syndrome
17) foreign body ingestion
18) radiation injury
19) caustic chemical ingestion
20) Crohn's disease (rare)
21) pancreatic pseudocyst (rare)
22) sexually-transmitted disease
- secondary syphilis, gonorrhea, Herpes simplex [8]
Clinical manifestations:
- association with dysphagia
- may occur on a background of heartburn
Special laboratory:
- swallowing study
- upper endoscopy
Radiology:
- anteroposterior & lateral neck X-ray
- chest X-ray
Management:
- depends upon specific etiology
