oxymetholone (Anadrol-50)
DEA class 3.
Indications:
- treatment of anemias caused by deficient erythropoiesis
- acquired aplastic anemia
- congenital aplastic anemia
- myelofibrosis
- hypoplastic anemias due to the administration of myelotoxic drugs
Dosage:
- 1-5 mg/kg
Tablet: 50 mg
Adverse effects:
- Hepatic:
- cholestatic jaundice
- hepatocellular neoplasms
- peliosis hepatis
- Genitourinary:
- testicular atrophy, oligospermia, impotence, chronic priapism, epididymitis, bladder irritability (men)
- clitoral enlargement, menstrual irregularities (women)
- CNS: excitation, insomnia.
- GI: nausea, vomiting, diarrhea
- Hematologic:
- bleeding in patients on anticoagulant therapy
- iron-deficiency
- leukemia has been reported
- Gynecomastia
- Deepening of the voice in women.
- Hirsutism and male-pattern baldness in women, male-pattern of hair loss in postpubertal males
- Acne (especially in women & prepubertal boys)
- Premature closure of epiphyses in children
- Muscle cramps
- Edema
- Decreased glucose tolerance
- Unfavorable lipid profiles
- increased serum LDL cholesterol
- decreased serum HDL cholesterol
