ovariectomy (oophorectomy)

Surgical removal of one or both ovaries. Indications: - prophylactic bilateral salpingo-oophorectomy (BSO), with or without hysterectomy, after completion of childbearing is the standard of care for female carriers of BRCA1 mutation or BRCA2 mutation [4] Complications: - increased risk of Parkinson's disease [1] (RR = 1.8) - increased risk of cognitive impairment [2] (RR = 1.6) - increased risk of cardiovascular disease [3] a) coronary artery disease & myocardial infarction [5] b) stroke [5] - increased risk of chronic renal failure [6] - increased all-cause mortality [5]
