onycholysis
Separation of the nail plate from the nail bed. The separated portion is white & opaque in contrast to attached portions which retain the pink & translucent appearance of normal nails.
Etiology:
1) hyperthyroidism, especially the ring finger
2) onychomycosis (Candida)
3) trauma
4) chemical exposure (nail cosmetics)
5) drug reaction
a) tetracycline
b) chlorpromazine
6) psoriasis
7) Pseudomonas infection
