Dietary Sources: 1) see vegetable oil for omega-3 vs omega-6 composition of vegetable oils 2) animal fat (other than fish oil) tends to have a low content of omega-3 fatty acids Clinical significance: - American Heart Association has recommended >= 5-10% energy from omega-6 polyunsaturated fatty acids [2] - increased all-cause mortality from replacing saturated fat in diet with linoleic acid (omega-6) & increased cardiovascular mortality (RR = 1.70) [1] - omega-6 fatty acids as present in olive oil reduce oxidative stress & mitigate cognitive decline in older adults [3]
