Oxysterols receptor LXR-alpha; liver X receptor alpha; nuclear orphan receptor LXR-alpha; nuclear receptor subfamily 1 group H member 3 (NR1H3, LXRA)

Function: - ligands are oxysterols - LXR-alpha binds to RXR to form heterodimers which bind to & activate LXRE enhancer elements - interaction with RXR shifts RXR from its role as a silent DNA-binding partner to an active ligand-binding subunit in mediating retinoid responses through target genes defined by LXRE enhancer elements - role in regulation of cholesterol homeostasis via oxysterols - heterodimer of LXRA & RXR Structure: - belongs to the nuclear hormone receptor family, NR1 subfamily - contains 1 nuclear receptor DNA-binding domain Compartment: nucleus (putative) Alternative splicing: named isoforms=2 Expression: - visceral organs specific expression - expressed in liver, kidney & intestine > spleen > adrenals - also expressed in adipose tissue, macrophages - induced by 9-cis retinoic acid (9CRA)
