10,881 patients age 50-74 with diastolic BP > 100 mm Hg randomized, open, blinded endpoint study Treatment groups 1) diltiazem 2) beta-blocker plus diuretic Endpoints: stroke, myocardial infarction, cardiovascular death Analysis by intention to treat Results: 1) primary endpoint occurred in 403 patients in diltiazem group and 400 patients in beta-blocker plus diuretic group 2) blood pressure lowered 20-23/19 mm Hg in both groups, slighty favoring beta-blocker diuretic group
