nucleolar transcription factor 1; autoantigen NOR-90; upstream-binding factor 1; UBF-1 (UBTF, UBF, UBF1)

Function: - required for transcriptional activator-dependent transcription from TATA-containing promoters [4] - not required for rRNA transcription, but nonetheless DNA transcription is stimulated in the presence of UBF1 [6] - UBF1-stimulated RNA polymerase-1 activity is inhibited by Rb protein [6] - recognizes the ribosomal RNA gene promoter & activates transcription mediated by RNA polymerase 1 through cooperative interactions with the species-specific transcription factor SL1 - binds specifically to the upstream control element - phosphorylated & activated by PIK3CA (putative) - binds to IRS1 & PIK3CA (putative) Structure: - homodimer - contains 6 HMG box DNA-binding domains Compartment: nucleus Alternative splicing: named isoforms=2 Expression: - 50,000 molecules/cell Pathology: - autoantibodies to UBF1 rarely present in patients with scleroderma Laboratory: - upstream-binding factor Ab in serum
