nonoxynol 9
A group of surface-acting agents used in spermicidal preparations such as contraceptive foams & diaphragm jellies.
Vaginal agent available as foam, cream, or suppositories.
Provides some protection against Chlamydia & gonorrhea.
Does NOT provide adequate protection against HIV [2,5] or other STDs [5]
Adverse effects:
-> frequent use may cause genital or rectal lesions which may facilitate HIV transmission [2]
Mechanism of action:
-> surface active agent: disrupts sperm cell membrane [3]
