neurite outgrowth inhibitor Nogo (reticulon-4, Nogo protein, Foocen, neuroendocrine-specific protein, NSP, neuroendocrine-specific protein C, RTN-x, reticulon-5, RTN4, KIAA0886, My043, SP1507)

Function: 1) inhibitory myelin protein; member of reticulon family 2) inhibits axonal extension/regeneration (both in restriction of axonal regeneration after injury & in structural plasticity in CNS) 3) isoform 2 reduces the anti-apoptotic activity of Bcl-xl & Bcl-2 4) binds to RTN4R 5) interacts with Bcl-xl & Bcl-2 6) Nogo-A (full length) has strongest inhibitory activity in culture Compartment: endoplasmic reticulum Alternative splicing: isoforms: at least 4; - Nogo-A, Nogo-B & Nogo-C Expression: - isoform 1 expressed in brain & testis, weakly in heart & skeletal muscle - isoform 2 widely expressed except for liver - isoform 3 expressed in brain, skeletal muscle, adipocytes - isoform 4 is testis-specific - Nogo-A (full length) is highly expressed in oligodendrocytes but not Schwann cells
