nifurtimox (Lampit)
Indications: Chagas disease (Trypanosoma cruzi)
1) 8-10 mg/kg/day for adults
2) 12.5-15 mg/kg/day for adolescents
3) 15-20 mg/kg/day for children ages 1-10 years
4) doses given orally, divided QID
5) therapy should be continued to 90-120 days

Adverse effects:
1) abdominal pain
2) anorexia
3) nausea/vomiting
4) weight loss
5) neurologic manifestations:
a) restlessness
b) disorientation
c) insomnia
d) twitching
e) paresthesia
f) polyneuritis
g) seizures
6) symptoms, generally resolve when dosage is reduced or therapy is discontinued
