hypoglycemia in brain Pathology: - alters brain function & behavior - alters function of neurons Clinical manifestations: - impaired judgment - dysphoria, anxiety, moodiness, depression - fear of dying, suicidal thoughts - irritability, belligerence, combativeness, rage - personality change, emotional lability - fatigue, weakness, apathy, lethargy - confusion, amnesia, dizziness, delirium - blurred vision, double vision - difficulty speaking, slurred speech - ataxia, focal or general motor deficit, paralysis, hemiparesis - paresthesia, headache - stupor, coma, abnormal breathing - generalized or focal seizures - loss of consciousness - eventual death is not corrected Laboratory: - glucose in serum/plasma < 20 mg/dL - glucose in CSF if hypoglycorrhachia suspected Management: - glucose - glucagon
