neurogenic arthritis (neurogenic arthropathy)

Charcot joint is the most common form. Etiology: - diabetes mellitus - stroke Pathology: - destructive arthropathy due to impaired pain perception & proprioception Clinical manifestations: - joint swelling, joint effusion - joint deformity, joint instability - pain may be disproportionately mild due to the underlying neuropathy Radiology: - X-ray of joint Management: - joint immobilization slows disease progression - orthopedic surgery if arthritis is advanced
