nestin (NES)

Function: - intermediate filament protein expressed in CNS stem cells in neural tube - later replaced by neurofilament upon terminal differentiation - may play a role in the trafficking & distribution of intermediate filament proteins & potentially other cellular factors to daughter cells during progenitor cell division (putative) - interacts with FHOD3 (putative) Structure: belongs to the intermediate filament family Expression: - CNS stem cells - immature skeletal muscle cells - upon terminal neural differentiation, nestin is down-regulated & replaced by neurofilaments Pathology: - expressed in: - primitive neuroectodermal tumors [2] - rhabdomyosarcoma [1] - medulloblastoma [3] - astrocytoma [3] - glioblastoma [3] - ependymoma [3] - ganglioglioma [3] - meningioma [3]
