Neomycin/Polymixin B (Neosporin GU irrigant)
Indications:
- short term use as a continuous irrigant or rinse in the urinary bladder to prevent bacteriuria & gram-negative septicemia associated with use of indwelling catheters
- topical bacterial infections due to susceptible organisms
- skin infection [2]
- otitis externa
- eye infections
- keratitis
- uveitis
- blepharoconjunctivitis
- corneal abrasion [2]
Contraindications:
Pregnancy category: D
Dosage:
- children & adults: bladder irrigation continuous irrigant or rinse in the urinary bladder 1 mL is added to 1 liter of normal saline with rate of administration adjusted to urine output generally no more than 1 liter of irrigant used per day Irrigant solution: neomycin sulfate 40 mg & polymixin B sulfate 200,000 units/mL (1 mL)
Adverse effects:
- not common (1-10%)
- contact dermatitis, erythema, rash, urticaria, burning, neuromuscular blockade, ototoxicity, nephrotoxicity, bladder irritation
