myelophthisic anemia

Pathology: - bone marrow failure secondary to infiltration by non-hematopoietic cells or pathogens - destruction of hematopoietic precursor cells, often associated with marrow fibrosis Etiology: - metastatic carcinoma - lymphoproliferative malignancies - disseminated granulomatous disease - inherited disorders (Gaucher disease) Clinical manifestations: - anemia - thrombocytopenia - neutropenia Laboratory: - nucleated red cells, teardrop forms - giant platelets - immature myeloid cells in peripheral smear
