myelin-oligodendrocyte glycoprotein (MOG)
Function:
- minor component of the myelin sheath
- may be involved in completion &/or maintenance of the myelin sheath & in cell-cell communication
Structure:
- may form homodimers or heterodimers between the different isoforms
- belongs to the immunoglobulin superfamily, BTN/MOG family
- contains 1 Ig-like V-type domain (immunoglobulin-like)
Compartment:
- cell membrane
- isoforms 1,,5 multi-pass membrane protein (putative)
Alternative splicing: named isoforms=9; Additional isoforms seem to exist some isoforms may not be functionally active, or may be expressed at low level in adults
Expression:
- found exclusively in the CNS, where it is localized on the surface of myelin & oligodendrocyte cytoplasmic membranes
Pathology:
- myelin oligodendrocyte glycoprotein disease
Laboratory:
- myelin-oligodendrocyte glycoprotein IgG in serum/plasma
Note:
- do not confuse with oligodendrocyte-myelin glycoprotein
