Specimen: 1) cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) 2) analyze fresh or store at 4 degrees C for < 72 hours 3) stable frozen at -20 degrees C for 6 months 4) stable at -70 degrees C indefinitely 5) specimens should not contain blood Normal range: < 2.5 ng/mL Method: RIA Clinical significance: - myelin basic protein is released into the CSF whenever there is damage to neural tissue with destruction of myelin sheaths - CSF MBP is a non-specific indicator of active CNS disease - levels of CSF MBP rise within days of CNS insult Increases: 1) CNS trauma 2) stroke 3) CNS tumor 4) multiple sclerosis 5) subacute sclerosing panencephalitis 6) viral encephalitis 7) other neurological conditions
