myelin basic protein (MBP) in CSF
Specimen:
1) cerebrospinal fluid (CSF)
2) analyze fresh or store at 4 degrees C for < 72 hours
3) stable frozen at -20 degrees C for 6 months
4) stable at -70 degrees C indefinitely
5) specimens should not contain blood
Normal range: < 2.5 ng/mL
Method: RIA
Clinical significance:
- myelin basic protein is released into the CSF whenever there is damage to neural tissue with destruction of myelin sheaths
- CSF MBP is a non-specific indicator of active CNS disease
- levels of CSF MBP rise within days of CNS insult
Increases:
1) CNS trauma
2) stroke
3) CNS tumor
4) multiple sclerosis
5) subacute sclerosing panencephalitis
6) viral encephalitis
7) other neurological conditions
